Clicking on a picture labled with a "§" will dispaly a larger picture if one is available.Configuring Your Browser for Your EyesThese days, most browsers have tools to help the visually impaired and those of us who are just suffering from eyestrain. To enlarge the text, press the "Control" key and the "+" key simultaneously. To increase it further, press the two keys again (and again). If you have increased the page too much press the "Control" key and the "-" key.
Accessing the Web When You have Severe Visual DifficultiesThe free WEBBIE browser has been pared down visually and uses tones and clicks to indicate the actions it is performing. It displays the web in a line by line fashion using fonts that can be increased in size as desired.Using a mouse can be difficult when you have severe vision problems. WEBBIE allows you to navigate through the web using the arrow keys. The WEBBIE initiative provides many other programs to give the visually impaired access to content on the web. Also included with WEBBIE is a PDF viewer to ease access to Adobe documents such as our monthly newsletter. WEBBIE can be downloaded from this page § . Getting the Web to Read to YouThe free open source browser Firefox, has a free extension Fire Vox that reads the web to you in an intelligent fashion designed for power web readers. Fire Vox allows you to to skim quickly through a web page. Unlike WEBBIE that works in a line by line fashion, Fire Vox reads in a paragraph by paragraph fashion and has a useful "read that again" function. If the web page was built using headings, Fire Vox can provide a high level summary of a web headings. It can be a great browsing, skimming and information collecting tool. When used in conjunction with Project Gutenberg § you have free access to audio versions of many classics. Text is increased(or decreased ) using the Control + and the Control - keys. Alternatives to PicturesThe UCN web site is designed to be accessible to blind viewers. All pictures are provided with alternate descriptions. Also photos are centralized in photo albums that can be easily bypassed by visually impaired web users. Respect of Personal PrivacyThe web site does not collect nor distribute personal information.
